LG Electronics, Inc, a global leader in appliances, today filed a patent infringement action against Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE: WHR). The action was filed in the United States District Court of New Jersey. In the lawsuit, LG charges Whirlpool with infringing LG's U.S. Patent Nos. 5,461,886; 5,768,731; and 5,339,474 through the marketing of Whirlpool's Calypso and Duet model washing machines.

The patents are directed to innovations found by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to represent patentable inventions entitling LG to exclusive legal rights. LG believes that Whirlpool has improperly infringed upon its exclusive rights by incorporating its 886 and 474 patented inventions in the Whirlpool Calypso model washing machines and its 731 patented inventions in the Whirlpool Duet model washing machines. LG is seeking to collect damages for past infringement and to stop Whirlpool from continuing to use LGs patented technologies in Whirlpool's machines.

We are committed to protecting and defending LG's patent rights to the fullest extent of the law, says Daniel Lee, Director, Marketing Communications, LG Home Appliances. LG's innovations and patented technologies are the results of extensive LG research and development efforts to provide consumers with the best products and value. LG has grown rapidly due to product innovation, which has been changing the marketplace, Lee says. LGs patented innovations must and will be protected.

The LG patents asserted against Whirlpool in this action represent a few of the thousands of patents LG has obtained on innovations and technical advances it has made through its extensive research and development efforts. In the United States alone, LG has been granted over 3,000 U.S. patents. In 2003, LG filed over 1,300 patent applications in the United States Patent and Trademark Office on its innovations, and LG projects that it will file at least that many applications in 2004 in that Patent Office. In this global economy, LG files patent applications on its inventions throughout the world to protect its investments and its ability to bring the finest technical advances to its customers.

The LG brand has experienced enormous success and demonstrated impressive market share gains with the introduction of technically advanced appliances that meet consumers' demand for both major and small appliances that not only get the job done, but look great and enhance the home. In the front-loading laundry category, LG captured a significant share of the U.S. market within a few months of introducing the first unit. Several major retailers began carrying LG laundry products in their stores in 2003, giving the LG brand a greater national presence.

The company received a great deal of attention in 2003 for their Internet Refrigerator and continues to demonstrate leadership in innovation with the introduction this year of the TROMM Front Load Washer/Dryer, Television Refrigerator, and Combination Microwave Oven/Coffee Maker.
