Burner Flames Uneven, Large, Small - Gas Cooktops - Ranges

Cooktop, oven, and burner temperature issues may be resolved without a technician. If you see any error on the display screen, please visit our Error Codes - Cooktop and Range page to resolve the error.

NOTE: This article should only be used for troubleshooting GAS ranges. Especially LRG, LDG, LCG, and LSCG Models.

  1. Liquid Propane(LP) gas connection.

    • All LG Gas units come ready for natural gas.

    • In order to connect to liquid propane (LP), the unit MUST be converted.

    • If the unit is connected to LP, but not converted for LP, the unit WILL have abnormal combustion.

    • The LP conversion should be performed by the installer or a gas technician.

  2. Burner caps and heads sitting flat.

    If the burner cap is not assembled correctly on the burner head, the flames will not come out evenly. This may even cause in abnormal combustion.

    • Reassemble the burner heads and caps so they sit flat and flush with the cooktop surface.

  3. Correct burner position.

    Your gas range cooktop has four or five sealed gas burners, depending on the model.

    • These can be assembled and separated.

    • There is one small, one medium, one large, and one extra large burner head and cap.

    • Make sure that the caps and heads are placed in the correct locations.

    • The burner cap may be in the wrong position.

  4. Is the flame hole clogged?

    If the flame hole is clogged, disassemble and clean the burner head on the unit.

    • If you want to remove burned-on food, soak the burner heads in a solution of mild liquid detergent and hot water for 20–30 minutes.

    • For more stubborn stains, use a soft-bristled brush like a toothbrush.

    • After cleaning the burner head, allow to air dry completely before reassembling.

    • Any food or debris on the burner head will cause yellow flames.

    For Oval (Center) Burners:

    • Release 6 nuts(4nuts : On some models) on the reverse side of burner.

    • Remove foreign substance in the flame holes with a soft-bristled brush like a toothbrush.

    • After removing any foreign substances, rinse the burner head with water only.

    • After cleaning, allow to air dryer completely before reassembling.

  5. Check ignitor for debris.

    Remove the burner cap, check the ignitor and any of the port for debris and blockage.

    • If soil is seen on the ignitor, remove soil with a soft bristled brush (such as a toothbrush) and/or a soft cloth.

  6. Orifice is clogged.

    With the burner cap and head removed, check the orifice spud found in the center opening of the burner zone for any debris or soils clogging it.

    • If soil is seen on the orifice, remove soil with a soft bristled brush (such as a toothbrush).

    • If the orifice is clogged with any food or debris, remove with tweezers.

  7. Is the Low Flame (Simmer) function used?

    YES, follow the steps below on how to adjust the Surface Burner to the Low Flame (Simmer) Setting.

    NOTE: If the flames are too high or low and you must adjust them, you may do so manually.

    1. Light all surface burners.

    2. Turn the knob on the burner being adjusted to Lo.

    3. Remove the knob.

    4. Insert a small, flat-blade screwdriver into the valve shaft.

    5. Turn the valve to adjust the flame.

    6. Replace the knob.

    7. Test the flame stability.

      • Test 1: Turn the knob from Hi to Lo quickly. If the flame goes out, increase the flame size and test again.

      • Test 2: With the burner on a Lo setting, open and close the oven door quickly. If the flame is extinguished by the air currents created by the door movement, increase the flame height and test again.

    8. Repeat steps 1-6 for each surface burner.

  8. Oval burner seems too weak.

    Does the oval burner seem too weak or do the flames seem too low?

    The oval burner is designed for 8,000 or 10,000 BTUs, depending on the model. The oval burner disperses the flames over a larger surface area, which results in the flames being lower than round burners of the same BTU rating. This is normal.

    1. Select from the models below for more detail:

      LRG309*, LDG301*, LDG303* LRG41*, LDG43*
    2. LRG3093, LRG3095, LRG3097
      LDG3011, LDG3015, LDG3016, LDG3017
      LDG3031, LDG3035, LDG3036, LDG3037

      The oval burner on these models is 8,000 BTUs. Preheating is necessary, as is using the proper cookware.

      On these models, if the preheated griddle plate is still unsatisfactory, place the griddle on the left side of the cooktop and turn ON the two left burners (left front and left back). The left front should be set to "4", while the left back burner should be set to "5".

    3. LRG4113, LRG4115
      LDG4313, LDG4315

      The oval burner on these models is 10,000 BTUs. Preheating is necessary, as is using the proper cookware.

  9. Flames lower than other flames.

    If the flames that are located just beneath the grate legs are lower than the other flames, this is normal. The flames should not come in direct contact with the grates.

    • If the flames come in direct contact with the grates, the parts of the grates that are in contact with the flames will be hotter and the result is uneven cooking.

    • In the example below, the left image shows a 12K BTU burner and the right image shows a 17K BTU burner.
