LG’s 4k Guide on Maximizing TV Resolution with Xbox Series S or X

These new consoles have faster load times, higher resolution and better frame rate and input latency on thousands of Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. This article illustrates how to enjoy the most out of Microsoft’s new gaming console Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on your LG TV.

Note: You can boost your frame rate up to 120Hz in UHD resolution and adjust your high frame rate (HFR) to match the variable refresh rate (VRR) speed of your selected video game for a smooth experience. Other features such as HDR10, Dolby Vision may also be supported on your LG TV, check your TV guide for details.

  • 4K and 120 / VRR features are available from the models listed below:

    2019 Model: All Settings > General > About this TV > Software Version.

    2020 Model: All Settings > Support > Software Update > Software Version.

    Once you have the TV SW Version that is 03.11.15 or higher you are good to go.

    Note: Please check whether or not your LG TV has the latest software version as listed below.

    If you do not see your TV SW version, you can update your TV at following locations.

    Please note that the VRR feature is limited to just the 2019 and 2020 models shown in the table above. There are some 2020 models that have a designated HDMI port that is required in order to support 4K120 listed above.

  • Once you connect your Xbox Series X or S to your LG TV, it will automatically recognize the Xbox console automatically and label XBOX to the HDMI port.

  • When connected for the first time, the default resolution will initially be 1080p. Expect your LG TV to switch to UHD Deep Color when you change your resolution to 4k. While in UHD Deep Color mode, the Xbox will see that your TV is capable of 4K120, thereby enabling you to switch your refresh rate up to 120Hz.

  • Double check your 4k TV details on the setup menu and verify that all features listed have a check mark.



  • If your LG TV is still experiencing video issues with 4k120 you may need to check the following:

    • The HDMI cable needs to be a Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, or just simply use the one that comes your Xbox Series X or S console
    • Check your HDMI ports. Some 2020 models have a designated HDMI port that supports 4k120 as shown in the table below.
    • For those who wants to use AMD FreeSync Premium, you can enable it on your LG TV guide: @ All Settings >> Picture >> Additional Settings >> AMD FreeSync Premium as below.
    • If you want to change back to Dolby Vision, you will simply need to disable AMD FreeSync Premium which is labeled as HDMI VRR instead of AMD FreeSync Premium.

    Once you enable AMD Freesync Premium, it will automatically disable Dolby Vision as shown below.

    If you want to change back to Dolby Vision, you will simply need to disable AMD FreeSync Premium which is labeled as HDMI VRR instead of AMD FreeSync Premium.

    1st Option: All Settings >> Sound >> Additional Settings >> Digital Sound Out >> Digital Sound Out : Pass Through

    2nd Option: All Settings >> Sound >> Additional Settings >> Digital Sound Out >> eARC On
