LG TVs: Why Does my TV Show No Signal?

At a glance

An LG TV may display a no signal message because of poor signal strength, an incorrect TV input, or due to a connected device not being powered on.

Try this

  1. Select your connection type

  2. External device

Ensure the connected device is powered on

Make sure the connected device is fully powered on and not in standby or sleep mode.

If you are using a device such as a laptop or PC, try disconnecting and reconnecting the HDMI cable. This will correct any issues caused by sleep/hibernation mode.

Ensure the TV is on the correct input

Depending on the devices connected and settings enabled, the TV input can switch automatically to a different input with an HDMI-CEC enabled device.

Check the TV input source by pressing & holding the [INPUT] button on your LG remote to open the menu. From there, select the source corresponding to the connected device.

Follow the onscreen prompts to set up the connected device for universal remote control.

If using a receiver or sound bar as a hub, ensure the receiver or sound bar is set to the correct input source.

Switch to a different HDMI input

    1. Disconnect the device from the current HDMI input on the TV and move it to a different HDMI input.

    Check the HDMI cable

A loose or faulty HDMI cable can cause connection issues between the TV and connected device.

    1. Ensure the HDMI cable it securely connected to the TV.

    2. If using directional HDMI cables, ensure the cable ends are connected to the proper source.

If the problem continues, it is recommended you replace the HDMI cable and check again.

If these troubleshooting tips do not resolve the issue, the TV will require service. Please visit our Request a Repair page for further assistance.

  3. Streaming apps and IP Channels

Try switching to a different app or channel

If you are having issues with a specific channel or app, switching to a different channel or app and then going back to the original can help resolve any issues.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the app

Apps can sometimes have a bad connection to the server. Uninstalling and reinstalling the app can refresh the connection and allow the latest version of the app to be installed. Learn how to uninstall and install apps below:

    Check your internet speeds

Having sufficient internet speed is the most important part of streaming to ensure your programming is the best quality and problem free.

    Video Quality Streaming Speeds
1080 or below 15 mbps or higher
4K or above 25 mbps or higher

    Restart your modem or router

Restarting your modem/router can help correct most streaming issues and correct any connection issues between it and smart devices in the home.

    1. Unplug the router for 30 seconds and then plug it back in. Allow 1 to 2 minutes for the restart to be completed.

    2. Once completed, retry the app or IP channel to see if the problem was resolved.

  4. Antenna

Check signal strength & signal quality

Low signal strength and signal quality can cause poor picture quality, a black screen, or a No Signal message to display on your TV.

Go to [SETTINGS] > [ALL SETTINGS] > [CHANNEL TUNING] > [MANUAL TUNING]. Check the Signal Strength and Signal Quality of the selected channel.

Signal Strength and Signal Quality must remain above 80%. A signal below 80% can lead to poor picture or low quality of programming for the specific channel.

    Realign the TV antenna

A slight shift in the position of the antenna can cause the signal strength and signal quality to drop below the required level for your LG TV. If channels that were available previously no long show up or the picture quality has dropped, the antenna may need to be realigned.

    Run auto tuning

Performing auto tuning will ensure the signal from the desired channel is strong enough for the antenna to detect and provide a good picture.

Depending on the numbers of channels available in your area, this may take up to 5 minutes to complete.
