Slow Water Dispenseing - Refrigerator

Slow water dispensing is usually the result of low water pressure from the main water supply, or a disruption of the water supply flow.

  1. Do you see any error code on the display?

    Yes No
  2. If you see any error code displaying on your refrigerator, please visit our Error Codes - Refrigerator article.

  3. Check water filter.

    Let's start by looking at the water filter, It is recommended that the water filter be replaced every six months or more often as needed. If not replaced regularly as directed, foreign particles may buildup on the filter which will reduce the water pressure and flow rate.

    Replace using only LG Brand filters that are not expired. Avoid using Non-LG Brand Water filter and Using a water filter for more than recommended period (6 months)

    Use of consumable products that are NOT Authorized by LG is not covered under Warranty

    LG recommends replacing the water filter every six months. If you have been using the filter for more than 6 months issues caused by this are not covered under Warranty

    NOTE: If there is a home water filtration system, or a reverse osmosis system, it may also affect the water pressure as the water leaves the filtration system.

    If your home has a water filtration system installed, a bypass cartridge will be needed in place of the refrigerator's water filter.

  4. Damaged water line.

    If the water line behind the refrigerator is kinked or bent, the water pressure will be reduced. Straighten any kinks in the water line.

    If water line is installed for the first time, there will be air in the water lines that must be flushed out. Press and hold a glass to the dispenser for 3-5 minutes. The water may sputter at first, but this will stop. Dispose off the first 2 gallons of water that are dispensed.

  5. Does water sputter out?

    If the water is sputtering out rather than flowing out in a steady stream, then there is air in the water lines. To flush out the air bubbles, press and hold a glass to the dispenser and run water until the sputtering stops. It can take a few minutes, so keep running water until it stops.

  6. Home water pressure.

    The required water pressure for the refrigerator water dispenser:

    With filter: 43 - 121 PSI.

    Without filter: 21- 121 PSI.

    If you're not sure what the home's water pressure is, a home water pressure gauge can be purchased from a hardware supply store. If a gauge isn't readily available, you can check the valve to the refrigerators water supply line. If it's partially closed in some way, the flow rate from the dispenser will be reduced. You can fully open the valve to help correct the issue.

    If the water pressure is below the minimum required pressure, a water pressure pump will be required for normal water dispensing operation.

  7. Check water valve.

    Check that the water valve is turned ON and connected properly.

    If your home has a reverse osmosis system, it may cause the water pressure to the refrigerator to be too low. Your refrigerator may need a separate water line that is not connected to the reverse osmosis system in order to achieve optimal water pressure.

    The location of your water valve will vary, but most of the time it is located behind the refrigerator.
