LG Refrigerator – Why Does the Water or Ice Taste/Smell Bad?

  • Troubleshooting

At a Glance

If the water from your refrigerator has an odd taste or strange odor, it may be caused by an expired water filter, infrequent use of the dispenser, or a problem with the water supply.

Try This

  1. Check the water from the kitchen sink.

If the water has a similar taste to the refrigerator, the issue is with the home's water supply. If fine, proceed to the next step.

  2. Flush the water line.

Flushing the water line removes trapped air and contaminants. This will normally happen if you're using the dispenser for the first time since installation or if the refrigerator dispenser has not been used for a long time.

    Note

Properly flush the system by pressing and releasing the dispenser pad by intervals of 30 seconds on and 60 seconds off until you dispense 2.5 gallons of water. This should take you about 5 minutes.

  3. Check the water line connected to the refrigerator.

If the water line connected to the refrigerator is old or has been recently installed, it may transfer an unfamiliar odor or taste to the water or ice.

1Pull the refrigerator out and turn off the water supply.

2Disconnect the water supply line from the refrigerator.

3Once disconnected, turn the water supply on and taste the water from the line. Once disconnected, turn the water supply on and taste the water from the line.

4If the taste exists, replace the water line.

  4. Replace the water filter.

If the water filter has not be replaced in the past 4 to 6 months, the water or ice may develop an unpleasant taste or odor.

Once the filter is replaced, be sure to dispense 2.5 gallons of water and discard the first 2 bins of ice.
