Emmy® Award-Winning Re-Recording Mixers Explain Why Great Sound Matters at Home

Have you ever found yourself turning up the volume during a quiet exchange of words in a movie, only to turn it back down moments later when music or an action sequence suddenly fills the room with sound?

Clearly understanding dialogue has become an important part of the home TV and movie viewing conversation. As TVs continue to deliver increasingly cinematic experiences, sound plays an equally important role in helping audiences connect with the story—no matter what type of scene is playing on screen.

To explore how sound professionals approach the problem of dialogue intelligibility and how immersive audio helps, LG Electronics teamed up with Emmy® Award-winning re-recording mixers Josh Berger (Beatles ’64) and Marc Fishman (The Last of Us, Superbad) for Masters of Audio, a new YouTube series exploring the art and science behind great home cinema sound—and how LG Sound Suite brings it to life.

Why Is TV Dialogue Hard to Hear?

In modern film and television production, soundtracks are vastly complex. Re-recording mixers handle massive amounts of audio data—sometimes managing up to 1,300 individual audio tracks for a single episode of a show.

“Most of the story lives in the dialogue between characters, and it’s always been that way,” explains Josh Berger. “We spend a lot of time making sure dialogue is always focused and the priority upfront.”

However, when these intricate multi-track studio mixes are played back through standard flat-screen TV speakers, which are often small, downward-facing, or rear-firing, dialogue clarity is compromised. Voices get squashed against score and sound effects, forcing viewers to struggle to hear spoken lines.

“Modern flat-screen TVs have a lot of obstacles between you and that speaker,” notes Marc Fishman. “When we’re mixing, our focus is on making sure it’s going to live on in the home forever, because 90 percent of people will experience it there. Making sure dialogue is articulated, clear, and upfront is of paramount importance because that’s how people follow the story.”

How LG Sound Suite Brings the Creative Intent Home

Across the “Masters of Audio” series, Berger and Fishman take viewers behind the scenes of professional sound mixing and explain concepts many viewers experience every day but may rarely think about, such as why movies sound different at home than in the cinema, or what Dolby Atmos1 adds to the experience.

According to Berger and Fishman, great audio must preserve the relationships between dialogue, music, effects and the overall acoustic environment that filmmakers create. It’s in honoring this balance when immersive audio can transform the home viewing experience. Rather than simply hearing sound coming from individual speakers, a well-designed immersive system can create a comprehensive sense of space and place, allowing dialogue to remain connected to the action on screen while music and environmental sounds build the world around it.

LG Sound Suite, powered by Dolby Atmos FlexConnect, brings that philosophy into the home with a flexible wireless approach designed around real living spaces. Instead of requiring consumers to arrange their rooms around traditional speaker locations, the system is designed to adapt the listening experience to the placement of the TV and compatible wireless speakers.

The result is a different way to think about home theater: one where technology works in the background so the story, rather than the equipment, remains the focus.
