What People Are Saying

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product, BUT? I purchased this product in December of 2012. Brand New. 5 years later, the area where you put the bleach in, I noticed rust around the plastic piece. I pulled the blue plastic cover off only to find the enamel peeling off and rust. Very disappointed with this.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor washer I bought this washer a few years ago and wish I had read reviews before buying it. This washer has too much technology in it. Sometimes it takes several hours to complete a load of clothes due to the washer shutting down on an uneven code(UE). We have to take the clothes out and place them back in hoping it will be balanced out, which sometimes works, but rarely. I would not recommend anyone to purchase this washer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from We have really loved this washer We purchased this washer along with the matching dryer near the end of 2012. We are constantly using it and have loved the way it has performed for about 5 years. However, the last several months we have been encountering Load Errors and Uneven Load Errors A LOT. It can be very frustrating to not be able to get a single load of laundry done for hours as a result. On top of that, it makes sporadic grinding noises. We have a home warranty program and the technician has advised us that it sounds as though bearings may have gone out and that parts would be very expensive. We are now looking to replace this washer with a newer model in the LG line as we have been quite satisfied with the product and we also don't want a mismatched pair. Our dryer has been a work horse and we have had no problems with it whatsoever. We recommend this product with an asterisk: be prepared to possibly replace or repair it sooner than you would a traditional washer, especially if you use it as often as we have/ do.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Frustrated Have had his machine for roughly 4 1/2 years, no major issues but it has developed a very annoying problem over the last few months. We have not changed our washing habits, but over the last few months every single load ends up showing an uneven load error. It can take a full day to get a single load of laundry done, unless you are willing to stand there trying over and over again to find the right balance for the load. Other wise it will just keep refilling with water draining and trying again, which results in a huge expenditure of water and energy. It used to only have this issue on particularly bulky loads such as bedding, which was annoying but manageable. Trying to do laundry for a family of four and having to constantly babysit the washer so it doesn’t take hours is getting old quickly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wish it would blow up and just die How a 54 minute load can take 4 hours is beyond me. Spin only means "spin" and "only" yet it still doesn't understand. Having to repeatedly remove all garments dripping water to strategically place them back so it will spin is ridiculous. But if you do not want to go through all that trouble, be assured it will constantly add water ALL DAY, FOR HOURS, and never spin. There is no smart technology here. There is a reason it is discontinued. Feel blessed you do not own one. A washboard and a stream would be easier.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay performance I bought the washer about 5 months ago. The large tub is wonderful. Love the "glass" top! I do not like the performance that I get with dark colors. They always come out with white streaks on them. I use HE detergent and it is not 2 or 3x concentrate. Also, I do not overuse detergent, just the small recommend amount. I called with this concern and the rep advised me to be sure that I use just plan HE detergent that is not xx concentrate. I ALWAYS use the extra rinse option on a load of dark clothes but I still get white marks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Washes like a dream I enjoy this washer very much. It is a high-efficiency and seems to use less water and detergent but still do a good job. Lots of custom settings and smartly programmed to not over- or under-wash my garments. The only tough part is that the basin is somewhat deep and I have to strain to pull out the bottom most garments after the wash is done.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lots of features, but mine rusted! I bought this washer about 5 yrs ago & it has rusted around the bleach compartment. It is not something that can be fixed, I will have to get a new wash machine. I'm not happy about this at all. I think a washer should last more than 5 yrs., especially when you take good care of it like I have.

My slam proof lid doesn't shut softly anymore, so if unsupported, will slam shut on its own. What needs to be replaced to bring back this function? Hopefully not the entire lid?

What's the max number of gallons of water this washer will cycle thru for 1 load

Asked by: Unclebrocstar
Regrettably, there is no way of determining how much water the ENERGY STAR® Qualified LG 4.7 cu. ft. Ultra Large Capacity High Efficiency Top Load Washer with WaveForce™, Model # WT5170HW will use for any given cycle because they are several factors that will determine how much water it uses. This washer automatically adjusts the water level by taking variables such as cycle selected, the load size, the load weight, fabric type, fabric thickness, amount of suds, water temperature and more to determine how much water to use. Some cycles require more water as will some added options. If the washer detects excessive suds, it will activate the Auto Suds Removal feature and the unit will drain and add water to dilute the concentration of detergent and it is possible for this feature to be activated multiple times within the same wash cycle...^IFV

Cl flashing and will not start

We regret the trouble you have experienced with this washing machine. The display code you have noted is the CHILD LOCK or CONTROL LOCK. According to the information listed on page 26 of the owner’s manual, this can be deactivated by pressing and holding the SIGNAL button for 3 seconds, while the power is active.

Shows OE  signal will not drain

Asked by: Lillie
We regret the trouble you have experienced with this washing machine. The OE error code is configured to advise that the washer is draining slowly, or not at all. Possible causes for this symptom can be that the drain hose is bent, pinched or clogged. If checking this drain does not resolve the matter, then the machine may require service. To make service arrangements, you may either contact our Customer Interactive Center at 800-243-0000, or you can check our Repair Provider Lookup on our website, at

Code "UE" on the ENERGY STAR® Qualified LG 4.7 cu. ft. Ultra Large Capacity High Efficiency Top Load Washer with WaveForce™, Model # WT5170HV is an indicator that informs you that the washer has an unbalanced load. Code 'uE" indicates that it is attempting to balance your load. During this time, the washer will fill with water in order to agitate and separate the items, then drain and try to spin again. The "uE" code will alternate with the time display. After three attempts to balance your load, the "uE" code will change to "UE", meaning that the washer was unable to rebalance the load and requires your assistance. Check to make sure that the washer is properly leveled as that can also cause the "UE" code. If you still have a copy of your owner's manual, you will find a list on page 30 with explanations of the codes that may appear on your display that you can refer to should they show...^IFV

We appreciate your interest in this washing machine. Use the WATER PLUS feature if you wish to add more water to your wash load. This option is especially useful for large or bulky loads.
