LG Refrigerator - No Ice

  • Troubleshooting
No Ice - Refrigerator

Units recently installed will require 24 hours rest before ice production may occur. If the unit is making ice but not making enough ice, please visit our Not Enough Ice - Refrigerator article.

The freezer must maintain an internal temperature below 19°F. The minimum recommended temperature on the unit's control panel for ice production is -4°F (-20°C). If you see any error code on the display, please visit to our Error Codes - Refrigerator article.

  1. New installation.

If your unit was recently installed, it may take up to 24 hours for each compartment to reach the desired temperature and for the ice maker to begin making ice.

    Step to follow:

    checkmark

Please wait 24 hours for ice production.

Did the ice maker cycle correctly?

    Yes No
  2. The ice maker is working correctly.

    • Allow 24 hours for full ice production to begin.

    • Ice production can also be affected if the unit is not leveled correctly because the ice maker compartment will not be able to maintain the correct temperatures for ice production.

Note: The ice maker compartment must be maintained at a temperature below 19°F.

  3. 3

    Manually reset the icemaker motor.

    Why are we doing this?

    • Forceful opening or closing of the door may cause the ice maker motor to shift. Shaking the ice maker resets the motor.

    • Voltage drops can occur throughout the day. If the unit attempted to operate the ice maker during a voltage drop, the ice maker would lock up. Powering the unit OFF and back ON will unlock the icemaker.

    Steps to follow:

    1. Locate the ice maker and remove the bin.

    2. Grasp the ice maker and shake it a couple of times up and down. Do this firmly but gently.

    3. Replace the bin and power OFF the unit for 30 seconds ( i.e trip the breaker or unplug the unit).

    4. Power the unit back ON.

Note: To see if this properly resets the ice maker motor, perform the icemaker reset in Step 2 - Reset the Icemaker, if the icemaker resets and cycles successfully, monitor the ice production.

After 4 - 6 hours, if the unit is still not producing ice, or harvesting ice, the unit will require a repair service. Please visit our Request a Repair page.

  1. 1

    Water lines MUST be connected.

Ensure that the water line is connected. Sometimes when the unit is pushed back into its place, recently moved, or installed, the water line may be disconnected. Check to make sure that the water line is connected.

  2. 2

    Inspect water line.

If the water line behind the refrigerator is kinked or bent, the water pressure will be reduced. Straighten any kinks in the water line and make sure that the unit or any other items are not resting on, or restricting the water line.

    • When a new water line is installed, there will be air in the water lines that must be flushed out.

How to flush the water line:

      1. Press and hold a glass to the dispenser for 3-5 minutes.

      2. A humming sound should be heard when the dispenser is pressed.

      3. If water begins to dispense, it may sputter at first, but will go away.

      4. Dispose of the first 2 gallons of dispensed water.

    1. Check the end of the water line for damage.

    check water line

    2. Ensure that the water line is inserted completely.

  7. 4

    Check dispenser arm.

Verify that the lever arm for the ice maker is not stuck in the up position.

    dispenser lever

Is the ice maker arm in the down position?

    Yes No
  8. Can the unit dispense 12oz of water within 10 seconds?

    Yes No
  9. Please visit our Water Will Not Dispense article to perform further troubleshooting steps.

  10. Is there ice and/or water in the ice tray?

    Yes No
  11. Place the lever arm in the down position. Normal ice production should resume. Allow 2 to 3 hours for the unit to produce the next batch of ice.

  12. Is the ice bin currently full of ice or are other items (besides ice) being stored in the ice bin?

    Yes No
  13. Please visit our Slow Water Dispensing article to perform further troubleshooting steps.

  14. Is there any ice in the storage bin?

    Yes No
  15. Verify that the supply valve from the home to your unit is turned ON, this is part of the home plumbing. Ensure that the water line is properly connected with no kinks or damage to the water line.

    water valve
  16. It is normal for ice production to stop in this case.

    • If ice production has stopped as a result of a full ice bin, there is no defect in the ice maker.

    • Removing some of the ice from the bin will allow the unit to resume ice production. It can take up to 2-3 hours before new ice is made.

Note: The ice bin shouldn't be used for storage of items such as soda bottles or other food items. Ice may not be produced under these conditions.

  17. We know that water is in the tray, so the unit can produce ice.

    1. Empty the ice bin.

    2. Make sure the freezer door is sealed properly.

Note: For the ice maker to cycle, the freezer must maintain an internal temperature below 19°F. The minimum recommended temperature on the unit's control panel for ice production is -4°F (-20°C).

  18. If the unit is still not producing ice, or harvesting ice, the unit will require a repair service. Please visit our Request a Repair page.
