When considering the purchase of a residential Energy Storage System (ESS), it helps to understand the technology behind the system’s key components. A basic understanding of how the system works will help you purchase the best system for your home and energy needs.
Homeowners add energy storage to new or previously installed solar systems for a number of reasons. Some like the advantage of storing excess energy generated by their solar panels for use when the panels aren’t producing (such as at night). Others appreciate the option to manage their energy sources to avoid purchasing electricity during peak use hours, when some utilities charge more for electricity from the grid. Still others want the security of storing energy for use during a power outage. Of course, many homeowners enjoy having all of these advantages.
An LGE Energy Storage System stores energy in a battery. The central component of any LGE Energy Storage System, therefore, is the battery it uses (or batteries, if more than one is installed for added energy storage).
The three main battery chemistry types available for energy storage are:
When LG Electronics began developing an energy storage system, there was no question which battery type the system would incorporate. Li-ion NMC technology was the best choice to provide a high level of storage capacity in a compact form factor, as well as long-term performance and reliability. Thanks to LGE’s deep experience in power electronics that use batteries, as well as work done by our sister company that manufacturers battery cells, we were able to bring a cost-effective, gold-standard Li-on NMC battery to market. The battery in the LGE Energy Storage System also requires minimal maintenance.
To understand the amount of energy stored by an LGE Energy Storage System battery, think of the light bulbs in your house. A 40W (watt) light bulb requires 40 watts in the moment you turn it on. If you leave that bulb on for an hour, it will consume 40Wh (watt hours).
A kilowatt is 1000 watts, and a kilowatt hour is the consumption of 1000 watts for one hour. The energy you purchase from your utility is measured in kilowatt hours.
When it comes to energy storage, you will generally see both kW and kWh measures:
A 5kW/10kWh system would provide your home with 2 hours of stored energy if you discharge the battery at the maximum rate allowed by the inverter. You can extend the life of the battery, however, by not discharging it at that high of a level (something you can control through the other components of your system, including your loads). For power interruption events/resiliency, for example, we recommend a “backup loads panel” to ensure non-essential appliances aren’t draining energy when they aren’t needed. This reserves more of your stored energy for needed appliances, such as your refrigerator.
LGE Energy Storage System batteries are world-class, sought-after Li-ion NMC batteries. They have a nominal storage capacity of 9.8kWh. The storage capacity of the system can be increased to up to 19.6 kWh if a second battery is added. The useable capacity is 9.3kWh for one unit and 18.6kWh for two.
The voltage range of the battery is 350 ~ 450V DC.
Although the battery is the most important component of an LGE Energy Storage System – the heart of the system, really – it is only one component. A battery, by itself, does nothing; it is not a storage system. To provide connectivity to your solar panels or home grid, energy storage and energy discharge capability, the battery needs a BMS (battery management system) and a PCS (Power Control System). These components understand the battery’s charge and discharge requirements and send signals to the battery that instigate the storage and discharge processes.
When choosing an ESS, one of the important things to consider is whether all of the components – including the battery – are specifically designed to work together. Purchasing an LGE Energy Storage System, which provides all of the components of the LGE Energy Storage System and serves as a one-stop-shop for questions and customer service, is a major advantage.
The BMS included in the LGE Energy Storage System, for example, keeps the battery operating within its allowable limitations for DoD and environmental parameters (specifically temperature). The system’s PCS is up to 97.5% CEC efficient (CEC efficiency is defined as the ratio of the usable AC output power to the sum of the DC input power and any AC input power5). The PCS limits charge/discharge power to 5kW or 7kW of surge power for up to 10 seconds. This is useful for starting motors or pumps that may have a higher initial power requirement.
Now that you know more about how energy storage works, you’re ready to take the next step toward increased energy usage control and security. LG Solar can put you in touch with a solar installer in your area who has been specially trained to install the LGE Energy Storage System.
