If You See an Er(E) FF, UF, LF, or rF Error on Your LG Kimchi Refrigerator

  • Troubleshooting

The Er(E) FF, UF, LF, and rF error codes appear when ice or frost buildup prevents the internal cooling fan from turning.
Before scheduling service, try unplugging your refrigerator, opening all the doors, and allowing the ice to thaw naturally for at least 24 hours.

What Causes an Er(E) FF, UF, LF, or rF Error?

  • Er(E) FF: A fan issue in the upper or freezer compartment
  • Er(E) UF: A fan issue in the middle or lower compartment
  • Er(E) LF: A fan issue on the left side of the upper compartment
  • Er(E) rF: A fan issue on the right side of the upper compartment
  • These errors most commonly occur when a compartment door is not fully closed. Outside air enters the compartment, causing ice or frost to build up around the fan motor and preventing it from turning.

How to Resolve a Fan Error on Your LG Kimchi Refrigerator

Follow these steps to thaw the ice around the fan.

Step 1. Move Your Food

Move all food to another refrigerator or an insulated cooler to prevent the food from spoiling.

Step 2. Place Towels Around the Refrigerator

Place dry towels on the floor around the refrigerator to catch any water that may leak out as the ice melts.

Step 3. Unplug and Defrost

Unplug the refrigerator and fully open all the doors. Wait at least 24 hours for the ice around the fan to melt completely.
Defrosting may take about one day in summer or up to three days in winter. The time may vary depending on the amount of ice.

Step 4. Remove Moisture

After all the ice has melted, use a dry towel to wipe away any moisture inside the refrigerator and on the floor.

Step 5. Plug the Refrigerator Back In

Make sure no moisture remains, and then plug the refrigerator back in. Check if the error code has cleared.

Step 6. Still need help?

If the issue persists after following the steps above, you can get further support through LG Chatbot on our website or by requesting a technician visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I Use a Hair Dryer to Melt the Ice More Quickly?
A. No. Hot air from a hair dryer can deform plastic components and create a fire risk. Leave the doors open and allow the refrigerator to defrost naturally.
Q. Can Water Collect in Other Compartments While the Ice Is Melting?
A. Yes. Cold air passages connect some compartments. As the ice melts, water may flow into other compartments. Wipe away any water that collects.
Q. Can I Break and Remove the Ice With a Tool Instead of Letting It Defrost Naturally?
A. No. Never use a sharp tool to break the ice. A sharp tool can damage the cooling pipes inside the refrigerator and cause a serious malfunction. Leave the doors open and allow the ice to melt naturally.
