[LG Air Conditioner] Heating stops and defrost/preheating icon appears

  • Troubleshooting

If the airflow stops during heating and the 'Defrost', 'Preheating', or 'Water Drop' icon appears on the display, this is a normal protection and preparation operation, not a malfunction.
This process prevents cold air from blowing indoors or melts ice on the outdoor unit. Please do not turn off the power and wait for about 5 to 15 minutes for warm air to resume.

What are the defrost and preheating functions?

These are essential functions that the air conditioner operates automatically to ensure smooth heating. You can use the product with peace of mind.

  • Preheating operation: When starting the heating mode, this function raises the temperature of the indoor unit piping in advance to prevent cold air from blowing directly on you.
  • Defrost operation: This function melts frost (ice) that forms on the cold surface of the outdoor unit during heating, preventing a drop in heating performance.

How should I resolve the air conditioner stopping during heating?

If the air conditioner stops and the defrost/preheating indicator appears, check the following steps.

  1. 1. Check the target temperature: The air conditioner stops blowing air when the indoor temperature reaches or approaches the target temperature.
If you want warmer air, use the remote control to set the target temperature higher than the current temperature.
  2. 2. Wait during preheating operation (initial heating): When you first turn on the heating, the blower fan will not run until the piping temperature rises above 22℃.
Wait a moment, and warm air will gradually blow out once preheating is complete.
  3. 3. Wait during defrost operation (during heating): If frost forms on the outdoor unit during heating, the air conditioner temporarily stops heating and starts the defrost operation to melt it.
At this time, the indoor unit louver angle is minimized to block cold air. Once the frost is completely melted, heating will automatically resume.

Precautions

  • In cold weather when the temperature around the outdoor unit drops significantly below minus 15 degrees Celsius, preheating and defrosting may take longer than usual.
  • During the initial heating stage, even after the piping is preheated and air begins to blow, it may temporarily feel lukewarm because it is similar to body temperature.

What is the operating status of the air conditioner during defrost/preheating?

When these functions are active, the air conditioner's status changes as follows:

  • Display: 'Defrost/Preheating' text or 'Water Drop' LED lights up.
  • Indoor unit fan: Stopped (OFF).
  • Indoor unit louver: Floor-standing models maintain their set position; wall-mounted models close.
  • Outdoor unit fan: Stopped (OFF).
  • Outdoor unit compressor: Running (ON).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. White ice has formed on the outdoor unit. Is it broken?
A. No. During heating, the outdoor unit blows cold air, so it is natural for moisture in the air to freeze and form frost. The air conditioner will automatically melt the ice through the defrost operation.
Q. Something like smoke is coming from the outdoor unit during the defrost operation.
A. This is water vapor generated as the ice on the outdoor unit melts during the defrost operation. It is not a fire or malfunction, so please do not worry.
