TV Has No Audio - TV

The absence of audio coming from your TV can be frustrating, but the steps below will help to find and resolve the issue.



  1. Are you using the TV speakers? Or an external device, such as a Soundbar or Home Theater? External TV Speakers
  2. Is the TV's Sound Out set to external speakers, matching the connection type you used? Yes No How can I check?
  3. Is the TV's Sound Out set to TV speakers? Yes No How can I check?
  4. Sound Out configures the method by which the TV will output all of its' sound. To access the Sound Out setting:

    • Open the Settings menu either by using the button on your remote, or if your remote doesn't have a Settings button, press the Home/Smart button, then click the Settings icon.
    • Navigate to the Audio/Sound menu.
    • Choose Sound Out, then select TV Speakers.
  5. Set the Sound Out mode to TV Speakers, or re-evaluate your answers to the questions above.

  6. Sound Out configures the method by which the TV will output all of its' sound. To access the Sound Out setting:

    • Open the Settings menu either by using the button on your remote, or if your remote doesn't have a Settings button, press the Home/Smart button, then click the Settings icon.
    • Navigate to the Audio/Sound menu.
    • Choose Sound Out, then select the type of connection you used to connect your audio system.
  7. In this case, the TV is properly configured to output its' sound using your chosen method. The issue is with the configuration of the external sound device, or the wiring connecting the two.

    • Make sure the audio wire you're using is correctly and securely connected to both the TV's Audio-Out port and the sound device's Audio-In port.
    • Try to use a different audio cable; your cable may have stopped working.
    • If using an LG Home Theater, Sound Plate, or Sound Bar, refer to Device Has No Audio - Sound Bar/Sound Plate/Home Theater
    • If using a home theater device manufactured by another company, please contact the manufacturer. The most general issue when using an external sound device is making sure the Sound Device is tuned to the proper input. This is often accomplished using a button on the remote labelled Input, Source, or Function.
  8. With Sound Out set to Internal speakers, no sound will come from the external speakers.

    There should, however, be sound coming from the TV speakers. Make sure the TV's volume is not muted, and is above 10, then continue below.

  9. Is the media you are listening to in Scan, Slow Motion, or Pause mode? Yes No What is this?
  10. Change the mode to normal playback.

    Scan, Slow Motion, and Pause are special playback modes in which the media plays back in specific ways. If your video or sound file is playing normally (except for the sound), you are not in one of these modes.

    However, if you are in one of these modes, the sound will not play.

  12. When you switch inputs (or use Live TV), is the sound present on any of them? Yes No
  13. Congratulations, your TV has sound! With the sound issue isolated to a single input, try these steps:

    • Make sure the A/V cable(s) you're using (generally HDMI or RCA) are correctly and securely connected to both the TV's A/V-In port and the media device's A/V-Out port.
    • Try to use different cable(s); your cable(s) may have stopped working.
    • Try to test the media device on another TV to confirm it's working.
    • If the media device is made by a company other than LG, please contact the manufacturer.
    • If the media device is made by LG, either search our Help Library for specific information regarding that device, or Contact Us.
    • Make sure the TV is not muted, and that the volume level is above 10.
    • If the issue persists, your TV may require Repair Service.

Sound Test will only function while using the TV's Built-in speakers. In addition, Sound Test is not available on all models. Check your user's manual to make sure.

Note: The menus may be slightly different depending on model.

In General, to perform a Sound Test:

  1. First, open the Settings Menu. There should be a Settings button on your remote, unless you have a webOS 1.0 TV, in which case use the Home/Smart button, then click the Settings icon.
  2. Navigate to the Sound (webOS 1.0, webOS 2.0) or Support (all others) section.
  3. If available, choose Sound Test.
  4. Performing this test should help to more accurately answer the Troubleshooting questions.
