March 22 marks World Water Day, a day to reflect on the value of the water we use every day and the importance of a clean water environment. Water is something familiar yet easy to overlook, but at the LG Water Science Lab, it is far from a simple subject of study. From water quality by region to taste and safety, LG conducts research from multiple perspectives, striving to ensure that customers can experience clean and safe water through its appliances. Today, we take a closer look at LG's perspective on the water we use every day, together with Lee Byung-ki, principal researcher at the LG Water Science Lab.

At LG's Water Science Lab, we're dedicated to water research. Our main role is to analyze water quality for customers using LG water purifiers and water purifier refrigerators, and to provide certified reports to ensure safe drinking water. We also run hygiene tests and develop new materials and filters to help improve water quality.
We receive over 100 water samples from customers every week. Currently, we're running tests here in our water quality lab. Our highly sensitive ICP-MS can detect inorganic substances down to 0.001 ppm for thorough analysis. As filters get smaller, we keep testing advanced materials that can remove more impurities even in smaller sizes.
For example, hard water can leave water spots on dishes, so dishwashers are designed with water-softening components. In regions like Europe, where water is harder than in Korea, detergent formulations may include phosphates to help them dissolve better and work more effectively.
LG Water Science Lab has been recognized as a KOLAS-accredited international testing laboratory and has demonstrated its world-class analytical capabilities by earning the 'Laboratory of Excellence' certification in the 2025 International Proficiency Testing program organized by the U.S. ERA. With water experts and sommeliers, we don't just study water safety but also its quality and sensory experience.
Water sommeliers analyze water taste and quality much like wine sommeliers do, making sure LG's premium purification systems deliver safe and refreshing water. The certification process starts with a theory exam. Then candidates are tested on their ability to taste and distinguish different types of water, including deep ocean water and waters with varying hardness. LG's sommeliers are fully certified professionals.
Pure water is naturally colorless and odorless. Hard water can taste heavy or slightly salty, while soft water tastes clean but flat. We aim for balanced water—not too hard or too soft—that feels clean and pleasant to drink.
Our goal is to create water customers can trust. We want people to feel, "If it's LG water, it's safe and it tastes good." We're always striving to deliver cleaner, healthier, and better-tasting water. Beyond that, we also support all LG products that use water—dishwashers, washing machines, and plant care appliances—helping us create better products overall.
