DC refrigerators have different recommended temperature ranges for each compartment (zone).
If you store food in the wrong zone, it may spoil faster, freeze, or absorb odors.
Store food in the right
zone for its type, avoid blocking the cold air outlet (vent), and adjust the temperature setting based on the
amount of food and the season.
Why food freezes, spoils, or smells even though the refrigerator is running
The temperature inside the refrigerator varies by location.
Because cold air enters and
circulates from the vent, areas near the vent are colder, while areas near the door are relatively
warmer.
Improper storage location, overpacking, frequent door opening, and placing hot food inside can cause
each zone to fall outside its ideal range.
1. Natural temperature differences by location
The back wall and areas around the cold air outlet (vent) are generally colder.
Door pockets (door-side compartments) are frequently exposed to room air and are relatively warmer.
Lower shelves or drawers may be colder depending on the airflow design.
2. Airflow blockage and overpacking
If you place food directly in front of the vent, you can block air circulation.
When airflow is blocked, the area around the vent may freeze, while other zones may not cool sufficiently.
Overpacking reduces air movement and slows temperature recovery after the door is opened and closed.
3. High heat load from usage habits
If you open the door frequently, leave it open for a long time, or place hot food inside, the internal temperature may rise.
If you add a large amount of warm food at once, the temperature may rise temporarily and the compressor may run longer.
4. Settings not matched to season or load
If the temperature is set lower than necessary, vegetables or beverages may freeze.
Conversely, if it is set higher than necessary, the safe storage margin for dairy products or leftovers may be reduced.
How to use each temperature zone for better freshness and fewer problems
Store food by zone, organize items so they do not block the vent, and then fine-tune settings after
the refrigerator temperature stabilizes.
If you changed the settings or added a large amount of food at once,
it may take about 24 hours for the temperature to return to normal.
Step 1. Use the coldest areas for highly perishable foods
Raw meat, fish, and ready-to-eat leftovers should generally be stored in the coldest zone—away from the door and toward the back.
To help prevent leaks and odor transfer, keep raw foods sealed.
Using a tray or container can also help reduce cross-contamination.
Step 2. Use the door bins for items that tolerate warmer temperatures
Store seasonings, sauces, jam, and bottled beverages in the door pocket (door-side compartment).
If highly perishable foods such as milk and eggs spoil quickly, avoid storing them in the door pocket.
Step 3. Use vegetable and fruit drawers correctly
Store vegetables and fruits in the vegetable/fruit drawer (crisper) to reduce moisture loss.
Dry produce before storing it, and remove spoiled items immediately to help prevent ethylene buildup and mold spread.
Do not overfill the drawer, and be careful not to block the drawer’s air inlet.
Step 4. Prevent freezing in the refrigerator compartment
Do not place water bottles, leafy vegetables, eggs, etc. directly in front of the cold air outlet (vent).
If you see ice crystals or partial freezing, move the food slightly forward, away from the back wall.
If freezing continues, raise the refrigerator temperature by one level and check again after 24 hours.
Step 5. Improve cooling performance with proper loading and airflow
Leave space between items so air can circulate.
Keep a small gap from the back wall, and organize items so they do not cover the vent.
Store hot food only after it has cooled to room temperature.
Minimize the time the door is open, and make sure the door closes completely.
Step 6. Stabilize temperatures after power loss or heavy loading
After a power outage or after adding a large amount of groceries at once, the refrigerator needs time for the temperature to stabilize.
Avoid repeatedly opening and closing the door during recovery.
If your model has a rapid cooling function, use it only for a short time, then return to the normal setting.
Step 7. Reduce odor transfer and maintain hygiene
Store strong-smelling foods in sealed containers.
Wipe up spills immediately, and wash removable bins and shelves regularly.
If your model has a deodorizing filter, clean or replace it as recommended.
Step 8. When to suspect a fault instead of a usage issue
If the temperature remains unstable even after proper loading and settings, check for a gap in the door gasket (packing), excessive frost, unusual noise, and similar issues.
If there is no cooling at all, or frost builds up quickly, an inspection may be required.
Recording the symptoms, approximate temperature, and when the issue occurred can help with diagnosis.
FAQ
- Q. Which area is usually the coldest in the refrigerator compartment?
-
A. Areas near the back wall and around the cold air outlet (vent) are
usually the coldest.
Store highly perishable foods there, but be careful not to block the vent.
- Q. Why do vegetables freeze in the refrigerator?
-
A. Vegetables can freeze if they are too close to the cold air outlet
(vent) or the back wall, or if the refrigerator temperature is set too low.
Move vegetables to the vegetable/fruit drawer (crisper), and raise the temperature slightly if needed.
