Supported compressed video codecs on 4K TV

Overview of Ultra HD video codecs supported on LG 4K televisions including brief comparison between H.264 (AVC) and its successor H.265 (HEVC) and brief description of VP9 format.

Issue

The two major compressed 4K resolution video codecs supported on LG 4K resolution televisions are HEVC (H.265) and VP9. That being said both formats are supported at a resolution of 4096 x 2160 at 60 frames per second.

HEVC (H.265) being an improvement successor to AVC (H.264), implies the HEVC decoder will play H.264 coded video files only not at 60 frames per second in the case of 4096 x 2160 resolution but at a maximum of 30 fps.

Note HVEC vs H.264—a technical comparison Both codecs work by comparing different parts of a video frame in order to find the ones that are redundant within the subsequent frames. These areas are replaced with a short information, describing the original pixels. What differs HEVC/H.265 from H.264 is the ability to expand the size of these areas into bigger or smaller blocks, called coding tree units (CTU) in the HEVC/H.265. The pattern CTU sizes can be from 4X4 to 64x64, whilst H.264 only allows a maximum block-size of 16x16 (CTU is particular feature of HEVC). An improved CTU segmentation, as well as a better motion compensation and spatial prediction require much more signal processing capability for video compression, but has a significantly less impact on the amount of computation needed for decompression. Motion compensated prediction, another great progress in HEVC/H.265, references blocks of pixels to another area in the same frame (intra prediction) or in another frame (inter prediction).

Note

Some user-created subtitles may not work properly.
A video file and its subtitle file must be in the same folder. For subtitles to be displayed properly, make sure that the video file and the subtitle file have the same name.
Subtitles on a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device may not be supported depending on the manufacturer and model.
Streams that include Global Motion Compensation (GMC) and Quarterpel Motion Estimation (Qpel) are not supported.
ULTRA HD video (ULTRA HD models only) : 3840 × 2160, 4096 × 2160
Some HEVC-encoded ULTRA HD videos other than the content officially provided by LG Electronics may not be played.
Some codecs can be supported after a software upgrade.

Only Window Media Audio V7 and later are supported.
The AAC main profile is not supported.
Video files created by some encoders may not be played.
Video files in a different format than specified may not be played properly.
Video files stored on a USB storage device that does not support High
Speed may not be played properly.
