If the remote control is unavailable, you can use the physical button (jog button) on your LG TV to turn the TV on or off and navigate basic menus. Button behavior varies by model, so first confirm the button type and location on your TV.
Please Note
- Pressing and holding the TV’s button to power off will close all running apps.
- Any ongoing recordings may stop when the TV is powered off.
- Button location and operation can vary by model; check your TV’s physical button before attempting directional movement.
- Do not press the button with sharp objects to avoid damage.
LG TV button operation issues can occur when the button type or press method does not match your model.
LG TVs may use different physical button designs. Some models use a single press-only button, while others use a jog button that also moves up/down/left/right. If you use the wrong press method (for example, trying to move a press-only button), the TV may not respond as expected.
1. The TV has a press-only button (Type A) rather than a directional jog button
On some LG TV models, the product button supports only press and press-and-hold actions. It does not move left/right/up/down, so directional navigation is not available from the button itself.
2. The TV has a directional jog button (Type B), but it is being pressed incorrectly
On models with a jog button, you can both press and move the button to navigate. If you only tap the button when directional movement is required, menu navigation may not work.
3. Power-off by long press is misunderstood as a malfunction
When you press and hold the product button to power off, the TV closes running apps and may stop active recordings. This is normal behavior and can look like an unexpected interruption.
Use the LG TV product button according to the button type on your model.
Step 1. : Find the TV’s physical button and identify the button type
Check the underside, back, or lower edge of the LG TV for the product button.
If the button only clicks when pressed and does not move in directions, treat it as Type A (press-only).
If the button can be pressed and also moved up/down/left/right, treat it as Type B (directional jog button).
Step 2. : Operate a Type A (press-only) TV button
Power on: Press the button once.
Power off: Press and hold the button for more than 1 second.
Open or change menu: With the TV on, press the button to open the menu and cycle through menu items (behavior may vary by model).
Select a menu item: Press and hold the button for more than 1 second to confirm/select.
Step 3. : Operate a Type B (directional jog) TV button
Power on: Press the button once.
Power off: Press and hold the button for more than 1 second.
Adjust volume: Move the jog button up or down (model behavior may vary).
Change channels: Move the jog button left or right (model behavior may vary).
Use on-screen menus: Press once to open a menu, then move the jog button to highlight items and press to select.
Step 4. : If you need full control, use the remote control features instead of the TV button
Setting: Settings > General > Accessibility > Learn Remote Control
The TV’s physical button is intended for basic control only. For full feature access, use the remote control.
If you have an LG Magic Remote, you can also view button guidance on the TV using the Learn Remote Control menu.
FAQ
- Q. Why did my app close or my recording stop when I turned the TV off using the button?
- A. This is normal. Pressing and holding the TV’s physical button to power off closes running apps, and any ongoing recordings may stop when the TV powers down.
- Q. My TV button does not move left or right. Is it broken?
- A. Not necessarily. Many LG TV models use a press-only button that does not support directional movement. If your button only clicks when pressed, use press and press-and-hold actions instead of trying to move it.
