HGiG helps align HDR tone mapping with the intent of supported game developers. On compatible LG TVs, you can select HGiG in Tone Mapping Compensation while using Game Optimizer with a supported console connected by HDMI.
Please Note
- This feature works only when a game console is connected via HDMI.
- Tone Mapping Compensation options are available only when Picture Mode is set to Game Optimizer.
- Menu names and availability may vary by LG TV model, webOS version, connected console, and game title.
HGiG mode may not appear or may look different depending on your setup.
HGiG is available only in specific conditions. If the option is missing, greyed out, or the picture looks unexpectedly dark, it is usually related to the input connection, picture mode, or content compatibility.
1. The console is not connected by HDMI or the TV is not on the console input
Tone Mapping Compensation (including HGiG) is enabled only when the TV detects an active HDMI input from a connected device such as a game console.
2. Picture Mode is not set to Game Optimizer
Tone Mapping Compensation options are available only within Game Optimizer. If you are using a different picture mode, the HGiG option may not be shown.
3. The game or console does not support HGiG, or HDR is not active
Some consoles and game titles do not support HGiG, and behavior can vary by model and software. If HDR is not enabled on the console or the game is not running in HDR, results may differ.
4. The image looks darker when HGiG is selected
HGiG can appear darker than Tone Mapping On because it reduces the TV’s dynamic tone mapping so the game’s HDR calibration can control brightness more directly.
Set Tone Mapping Compensation to HGiG in LG TV Game Optimizer
Step 1. Open Game Optimizer and find Tone Mapping Compensation
Setting: Settings → General → Game Optimizer → Screen → Tone Mapping Compensation
1) Press the Settings button on the remote control.
2) Open All Settings.
3) Go to General, then open Game Optimizer.
4) Select Screen.
5) Select Tone Mapping Compensation.
Step 2. Select HGiG and compare with Tone Mapping On/Off
Setting: Settings → General → Game Optimizer → Screen → Tone Mapping Compensation → HGiG
1) Set Tone Mapping Compensation to HGiG.
2) If the screen appears too dark, switch between Tone Mapping On and Off to compare.
3) Choose the option that best matches your viewing preference and the game’s HDR calibration results.
FAQ
- Q. Why is HGiG greyed out or missing on my LG TV?
- A. HGiG is available only when a device is connected via HDMI and Picture Mode is set to Game Optimizer. Availability can also vary by TV model, console, and game title.
- Q. Is it normal for the picture to look darker with HGiG than with Tone Mapping On?
- A. Yes. HGiG can look darker because it limits the TV’s dynamic tone mapping so HDR output follows the game’s intended calibration more closely. If it is not comfortable for your environment, compare with Tone Mapping On/Off and select the setting you prefer.
