If the picture looks zoomed in, stretched, or parts of the image are missing, the TV’s aspect ratio or zoom setting may not match the content you are watching. Set the Aspect Ratio to a standard option to restore the correct picture size.
Please Note
- Menu names and available options may vary by model, region, and software version.
- Some apps, set-top boxes, or game consoles control picture size on the external device; the TV may not be able to change the aspect ratio for that source.
- If you use Zoom options, parts of the picture may be intentionally cropped.
An LG TV screen that looks zoomed, stretched, or cut off can happen in these cases.
This issue is usually caused by an Aspect Ratio or Zoom mode that does not match the video’s original format. It can also occur when an external device outputs a resolution or scaling mode that does not fit the TV.
1. Aspect Ratio or Zoom mode is set to a zoom option
If the TV is set to Zoom, Cinema Zoom, All-Direction Zoom, Vertical Zoom, or similar options, the picture may be enlarged and the edges may be cut off.
2. The content format does not match the current screen setting
Some broadcasts, movies, and older programs use different aspect ratios. If the TV is set to a fixed ratio that does not match the content, the picture can look stretched, too large, or too small.
3. An external device is scaling the image
A set-top box, streaming device, or game console may apply its own zoom/overscan or output resolution settings, which can cause the TV image to appear cut off.
Set the LG TV Aspect Ratio to match the content you are watching
Step 1. Change the Aspect Ratio in TV settings
Setting: Settings → Picture → Aspect Ratio
1. Press the Settings button on the remote.
2. Open Picture.
3. Select Aspect Ratio.
4. Choose a standard option that matches the content (for example, 16:9 for most TV and streaming content).
5. If a Zoom option is enabled, switch back to a non-zoom aspect ratio and re-check the picture edges.
Step 2. If the problem happens only on an HDMI device, check the device output settings
1. Confirm whether the issue occurs on all sources (Live TV, apps, HDMI inputs).
2. If it only occurs on one HDMI device, open that device’s Display/Video settings.
3. Set the device resolution to match the TV (commonly 1080p or 4K/UHD, depending on your model) and turn off any zoom/overscan or screen-fit adjustments.
4. Return to the TV and re-check the Aspect Ratio setting.
FAQ
- Q. Why does the picture look cut off only in one app or on one HDMI input?
- A. That app or external device may be applying its own zoom or scaling. Keep the TV Aspect Ratio set to a standard option, then check the app/device display settings for zoom, overscan, screen fit, or resolution options.
- Q. Which Aspect Ratio should I use to avoid a stretched picture?
- A. Use the option that matches the content’s original format. For most modern content, 16:9 is correct. Avoid Zoom modes unless you want to intentionally crop the edges.
