If your LG TV repeatedly powers on and off, start by confirming standby light status, power cord and outlet operation, and whether the TV can be powered on using the button on the TV. If the TV turns on from the TV button, the issue is often related to the remote control or its batteries.
Please Note
- Before checking connections, turn the TV off and unplug the power cord.
- Do not use damaged power cords, plugs, or loose outlets.
- If you smell burning, see smoke, or hear unusual noises, unplug the TV immediately and contact LG Customer Support.
- When testing a wall outlet, use only a small household appliance you know is working and keep hands dry.
An LG TV that turns on and off repeatedly can happen in these situations.
This symptom is commonly caused by an unstable power supply, a loose power connection, a remote control sending unintended power commands, or a configuration where the power indicator is disabled and the TV status is misread during troubleshooting.
1. Unstable power from the outlet or a loose power connection
If the wall outlet, power strip, or recessed energy-saving outlet is not supplying stable power, the TV may restart or cycle on and off. A partially inserted power plug can also cause intermittent power loss.
2. Remote control power signal issues
Weak batteries, stuck buttons, or a malfunctioning remote can repeatedly send a power command, making the TV appear to turn on and off by itself.
3. Power indicator setting is disabled
If the TV has power but the standby light is off, the Power Indicator setting may be disabled. This can lead to incorrect assumptions about whether the TV is receiving power.
Try these steps to stop your LG TV from turning on and off repeatedly.
Step 1. Check the standby light and power cord connection
In standby mode, the standby light on the lower edge of the TV should be on.
- If the standby light is off, firmly reconnect the TV power cord at the TV and at the wall outlet.
- If you are using a power strip or recessed outlet, connect the TV directly to a known-good, always-on wall outlet.
Step 2. If the TV has power but the standby light is off, turn on the Power Indicator
Setting: Settings > General > Power Indicator
If the TV is receiving power but the standby light remains off, enable the Power Indicator in the TV settings. Then re-check the standby light behavior in standby mode.
Step 3. Try turning the TV on using the TV’s built-in power button
Locate the power button on the TV (its location varies by model) and press it to turn the TV on.
- If the TV turns on and stays on using the TV button, check the remote control batteries and confirm the remote is operating correctly.
- If the TV still cycles on and off, continue to the outlet check below.
Step 4. Test the wall outlet and check your home circuit breaker
Plug a small appliance (for example, a hair dryer) into the same outlet to confirm the outlet is working.
- If the appliance also does not work, check your home circuit breaker and reset it if needed.
- If you are using an energy-saving recessed outlet, use the always-on outlet for the TV.
Step 5. If the issue continues, request service
If the TV continues to turn on and off repeatedly after completing the steps above, contact LG Customer Support to schedule a service visit for diagnosis and repair.
FAQ
- Q. My LG TV has power, but the standby light is off. Does that mean the TV is broken?
- A. Not necessarily. On some models, the Power Indicator can be disabled in settings. Turn on the Power Indicator (Settings > General > Power Indicator), then check the standby light again.
- Q. The TV turns on using the button on the TV, but not with the remote. What should I do?
- A. Replace the remote batteries and check that no buttons are stuck. If you use a Magic Remote, re-pair it by turning on the TV, pointing the remote at the TV, and pressing Wheel (OK). If the pointer does not appear, re-register by holding the Back and Home buttons together for more than 5 seconds until instructions appear.
