If your LG TV shows an Unsupported Mode message while connected to a PC, the PC is usually sending a resolution or refresh rate the TV cannot display, or the PC graphics driver is not outputting a compatible signal. Set the PC to a supported display mode and, if needed, change the setting from Windows Safe Mode.
Please Note
- Before changing settings, confirm the TV is on the correct input for the connected PC.
- If the PC screen is not visible on the TV, do not repeatedly change random settings; use Safe Mode to restore a compatible resolution.
- If you must force shutdown to enter Windows recovery options, save work first when possible because unsaved data may be lost.
- If you are using an adapter (for example, HDMI to DisplayPort), compatibility can vary by adapter model and may affect supported resolutions and refresh rates.
The Unsupported Mode message on an LG TV can occur in these situations.
This message typically appears when the PC outputs a resolution or refresh rate that the LG TV does not support on that input, or when the graphics card driver is not working correctly and sends an invalid signal.
1. The PC output resolution or refresh rate is not supported by the TV
If the PC is set to a display mode the TV cannot handle (for example, an unsupported resolution or refresh rate), the TV may show Unsupported Mode instead of the desktop.
2. A graphics driver issue is preventing a compatible signal
If the graphics driver is outdated, corrupted, or misconfigured, the PC may output an invalid mode even if the TV supports the intended resolution.
To clear the Unsupported Mode message on an LG TV, set the PC to a supported display mode.
Step 1. Change the PC resolution in Windows 10 or Windows 11
1) On the PC, right-click an empty area of the desktop.
2) Select Display settings.
3) In Display resolution, choose the Recommended option.
4) Confirm the change.
Tip: If the TV shows Unsupported Mode and you cannot see the desktop, proceed to the Safe Mode steps below and then return to Display settings to select a recommended resolution.
Step 2. Change the PC resolution in Windows 7
1) On the PC, right-click an empty area of the desktop.
2) Select Screen resolution (or Display settings, depending on your Windows 7 configuration).
3) Set the resolution to the Recommended option.
4) Apply the change.
Step 3. If the PC screen is not visible, start Windows in Safe Mode and then change the resolution
Use Safe Mode to load a basic video driver so you can restore a compatible resolution.
If Windows still boots normally:
1) Hold the Shift key and select Restart.
2) On Choose an option, select Troubleshoot.
3) Open Advanced options, then Startup Settings, then select Restart.
4) After restart, select Safe Mode.
5) Once in Safe Mode, open Display settings and set Display resolution to the Recommended option.
If Windows does not boot normally:
- If Windows detects multiple abnormal shutdowns, it may automatically enter recovery and allow Safe Mode.
- If it does not, power on the PC and then press and hold the power button to force shutdown during startup. Repeat until Windows Recovery appears, then follow the steps above to enter Safe Mode.
How to confirm Safe Mode:
- The desktop may show a black background and the words Safe Mode in the corners.
FAQ
- Q. Do I need to change settings on the LG TV to fix Unsupported Mode?
- A. In most cases, no. Unsupported Mode is usually caused by the PC output signal. Confirm the TV is on the correct input, then change the PC resolution and refresh rate to a supported mode.
- Q. What if I changed the resolution and the message still appears?
- A. Try a different supported resolution and refresh rate, then update or reinstall the PC graphics driver. If you cannot see the screen to make changes, use Windows Safe Mode to restore a recommended resolution first.
