If the same sound plays from both the TV speaker and an external audio device at the same time, a processing delay difference can cause an “echo” effect.
To reduce the echo, set the TV to use only one sound output. Please Note
- Before changing settings, please check how your audio device is connected (HDMI ARC/eARC, Optical, or Bluetooth).
- If you are using a soundbar, increasing the TV’s audio delay too much can make the echo worse.
- If possible, adjust AV Sync on the soundbar (or its dedicated app) instead.
- Menu names and available features may vary depending on your model, region, and software version.
- On older models, the setting location may be different, so please also check your product user manual.
- For exact usage and settings of third-party devices, please check the manufacturer’s customer service or user manual.
Why does the TV sound echo or feel like a reverb?
When the same sound is output through both the TV speaker and an external speaker at the same time, the processing delay can be different for each output path.
That timing mismatch can make the sound feel doubled or echo-like.
Also, if Digital Sound Output is set to Auto, extra signal processing before sending audio to the external device can add delay and make the echo more noticeable.
1. When Digital Sound Output is set to Auto
When Digital Sound Output is set to “Auto,” the TV may process the audio signal and then send it to the external device, which can add delay.
If the TV speaker is also playing at the same time, the external speaker may sound slightly late, which can feel like an echo.
2. When multiple speaker outputs are turned on at the same time
If a setting that plays audio through both the TV speaker and an external speaker is enabled, the two outputs can interfere with each other or fall out of sync.
This can cause echo or reverberation.
What settings should I change to reduce the echo?
First, select only one sound output so the TV speaker and the external speaker are not playing at the same time.
If you still hear echo, change Digital Sound Output to PCM and adjust the soundbar’s AV Sync (lip sync) to see if it improves.
Step 1. Change Digital Sound Output to PCM
Press the Settings button on the remote to open the All Settings menu.
Go to Sound, then open Advanced Settings.
Set Digital Sound Output to PCM.
If PCM cannot be selected due to your connection type or the content you are playing, keep the current setting and continue to the next step.
Step 2. Select only one sound output
Press the Settings button on the remote to open the All Settings menu.
Go to Sound and select Sound Out.
Choose only one option, such as HDMI ARC Device, Optical, Bluetooth, or TV Speaker.
If the echo happens when the TV speaker and an external device are both on, switch to a single output to remove the timing difference.
Step 3. Adjust the soundbar AV Sync (lip sync)
Press the AV Sync (or Lip Sync) button on the soundbar remote.
Check the sync value shown on the soundbar display.
Use the left/right buttons (or similar) to adjust the value until the echo or delay is reduced.
If supported, you can also adjust sync in the soundbar’s dedicated app.
FAQ
- Q. Why does the echo happen only when I use a soundbar or external speakers?
-
A. External speakers can have different audio processing and transmission steps than the TV speaker, so their delay times may not match.
If both outputs are active at the same time, the same sound can arrive at different times and be heard as an echo.
- Q. What should I try first when I hear echo?
-
A. Set Sound Out to only one option so the TV speaker and the external device are not playing at the same time.
If a small delay remains, adjust the soundbar AV Sync, and if needed, change Digital Sound Output to PCM.
