If your LG TV plays audio but the screen stays black, the TV may be receiving sound while the video signal is not reaching the panel. This is commonly caused by an external device, an HDMI cable connection issue, or a broadcast signal problem.
Please Note
- Before reconnecting any cables, turn off the TV and the connected device.
- Do not force connectors into ports; align the plug and insert it straight.
- If you suspect a building antenna or cable line issue, request an inspection from your property management office or your cable TV provider.
- If the TV does not show the volume indicator on screen, service may be required.
An LG TV with audio but no picture can happen in these situations.
This symptom usually occurs when the TV can output sound but is not receiving a valid video signal, or when the broadcast signal path is interrupted.
1. The HDMI cable or external device connection is unstable
A loose, damaged, or incompatible HDMI cable can allow audio to play while video does not display. This can also occur if the external device is not outputting video correctly.
2. The issue is coming from a set-top box or other external source
If you can see a set-top box menu or information banner but not the broadcast picture, the set-top box may be temporarily malfunctioning.
3. Antenna or cable broadcast line needs inspection
When an antenna or cable TV line is connected directly to the TV’s antenna port, a building distribution issue or provider line issue can prevent video from displaying.
Try these steps when your LG TV has sound but no picture.
Step 1. Check whether the TV can display the volume indicator
Press the Volume Up/Down button on the LG TV remote.
- If the volume indicator appears on the screen, the TV panel is displaying menus and the issue is more likely related to an external device, input signal, or cable.
- If the volume indicator does not appear, the TV may require inspection. Please contact LG Electronics service for diagnosis.
Step 2. Power off and reconnect the HDMI cable on both ends
1) Turn off the TV and the connected external device.
2) Disconnect the HDMI cable from the TV, then reconnect it firmly.
3) If possible, disconnect the HDMI cable from the external device and reconnect it.
4) Turn the external device back on, then turn on the TV.
If available, try a different HDMI port on the TV.
LG recommends using an authentic High-Speed HDMI cable (HDMI 2.0 or higher) for stable video output.
Step 3. Reset the set-top box power
If you can see the set-top box menu or broadcast information but the broadcast picture does not appear:
1) Turn off the set-top box using the power switch on the back (if available).
2) Wait 5 seconds.
3) Turn the set-top box back on.
If the issue continues after resetting, contact LG Electronics service for diagnosis.
Step 4. If using an antenna or cable line connected directly to the TV, request a line inspection
If a public broadcast antenna or cable TV antenna line is connected directly to the TV’s antenna port, request an inspection from your property management office or your cable TV service provider to confirm the line and signal status.
FAQ
- Q. The volume indicator appears, but the screen is still black. What does that mean?
- A. If the volume indicator appears, the TV can display on-screen graphics. In most cases, the issue is with the input signal from an external device or the HDMI cable. Reconnect the HDMI cable on both ends and reset the external device (such as a set-top box).
- Q. What if the volume indicator does not appear at all?
- A. If the volume indicator does not appear, the TV may not be displaying any on-screen output. Please contact LG Electronics service for diagnosis and a precise check.
