If you can hear audio but the screen is black or shows no video, the issue is often related to the HDMI connection, the selected input, or a temporary error in the connected device (such as a set-top box). Follow the steps below to confirm the TV is responding and to restore the video signal.
Please Note
- Turn off the TV and the external device before disconnecting or reconnecting HDMI cables.
- Do not force connectors into the port; align the plug and insert it straight.
- Use a certified High-Speed HDMI cable (HDMI 2.0 or higher recommended) to reduce signal issues.
- If the issue continues after troubleshooting, contact LG Electronics service for diagnosis.
Audio but no picture can occur when the external device connection is unstable
This symptom commonly occurs when the HDMI cable or port connection is loose, the TV is on the wrong input, or the connected device (for example, a set-top box) is not outputting video correctly even though it is powered on.
1. HDMI cable or connection issue
A damaged, non-certified, or loosely connected HDMI cable can allow audio to play while video fails to display.
2. External device output or temporary error
A set-top box or other external device may freeze or fail to output video even when it appears to be on.
3. Incorrect input selection
If the TV is not set to the HDMI input where the device is connected, you may hear sound from another source while seeing no picture from the intended device.
Restore the picture on an LG TV by checking the input, HDMI connection, and external device power
Step 1. Confirm the TV is responding by adjusting volume
Press Volume Up/Down on the LG TV remote.
If the on-screen volume indicator appears normally, the TV is operating and the issue is likely with the external device connection or signal.
If the volume indicator does not appear, try turning the TV off and on, then test again.
Step 2. Select the correct HDMI input
Press the Input button on the remote control and select the HDMI port that matches where the external device is connected.
If you are unsure which port is in use, try each HDMI input one at a time while the external device is powered on.
Step 3. Reconnect the HDMI cable on both ends
Turn off the TV and the external device.
Disconnect the HDMI cable from the TV, then reconnect it firmly.
Disconnect the HDMI cable from the external device, then reconnect it firmly.
If available, try a different HDMI port on the TV.
If possible, test with another certified High-Speed HDMI cable (HDMI 2.0 recommended).
Step 4. Reset (power-cycle) the set-top box or external device
If you can see the set-top box menu or program information but the broadcast/video screen does not appear, reset the set-top box.
Turn off the power switch on the back of the set-top box (if present), wait at least 5 seconds, then turn it on again.
If there is no rear power switch, unplug the power cord, wait at least 5 seconds, then plug it back in.
After the device restarts, reselect the correct HDMI input on the TV.
