This guide explains how to route set-top box video to your LG TV while sending audio to an LG soundbar using HDMI IN on the soundbar and HDMI ARC/eARC to the TV.
Please Note
- Turn off the TV, soundbar, and set-top box before connecting or disconnecting HDMI cables.
- Use a High-Speed HDMI cable. For HDMI-CEC control (SIMPLINK), use a High-Speed HDMI cable that supports CEC.
- Connect the soundbar HDMI OUT labeled TV (ARC) or TV (eARC/ARC) to the TV HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC.
- Port labels and available features may vary by model. Refer to your product labels if the port names differ.
Soundbar audio may not work when the HDMI ports or input mode are not set correctly.
If the HDMI cables are connected to the wrong ports, or the soundbar is set to a different input than the HDMI port used (HDMI1/HDMI2), the TV may show video but the soundbar will not play audio. Audio can also fail if the TV is not using the HDMI(ARC) output mode or if SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) is turned off on the TV.
1. HDMI cables connected to the wrong ports
The set-top box must connect to the soundbar HDMI IN, and the soundbar HDMI OUT (TV eARC/ARC) must connect to the TV HDMI IN (ARC/eARC). If either cable is connected to a non-ARC TV port or to the wrong soundbar port, audio may not route to the soundbar.
2. Soundbar input mode does not match the connected HDMI IN port
If the set-top box is connected to HDMI1 (or HDMI2) on the soundbar but the soundbar is set to a different function, the soundbar will not play the set-top box audio.
3. TV audio output or HDMI-CEC settings are not enabled
If the TV is not set to output sound to an HDMI(ARC) device, or if SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) is off, the TV may not send audio to the soundbar or may not control it properly.
Connect the set-top box to the LG soundbar first, then connect the soundbar to the LG TV using HDMI ARC/eARC.
Step 1. Connect the set-top box to the soundbar HDMI IN
1) Connect an HDMI cable from the set-top box HDMI OUT to the soundbar HDMI IN (HDMI1 or HDMI2).
2) Make sure the cable is fully inserted on both ends.
Step 2. Connect the soundbar HDMI OUT (TV eARC/ARC) to the LG TV HDMI (ARC/eARC) port
1) Connect a second HDMI cable from the soundbar HDMI OUT labeled TV (eARC/ARC) or TV (ARC) to the LG TV HDMI IN port labeled ARC or eARC.
2) Turn on the TV, soundbar, and set-top box.
Step 3. Select the correct HDMI input on the soundbar
Press the soundbar Function button (F) repeatedly until the display shows HDMI1 or HDMI2 (whichever you used). When selected, the soundbar display typically shows HDMI, indicating the HDMI audio path is active.
Step 4. Enable SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) on the LG TV (recommended) and set Sound Out to HDMI(ARC) Device
Setting: Settings > General > External Devices > HDMI Settings > SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) > On
On the LG TV, turn on SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) so the TV can communicate with the soundbar over HDMI.
Then set the TV audio output to the connected soundbar (commonly shown as HDMI(ARC) Device) in the TV Sound settings. The exact label may vary by model.
FAQ
- Q. Do I connect the set-top box to the TV first or to the soundbar first?
- A. Connect the set-top box HDMI OUT to the soundbar HDMI IN first, then connect the soundbar HDMI OUT (TV eARC/ARC) to the LG TV HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC. This routes set-top box audio to the soundbar while the TV receives video through the soundbar.
- Q. My soundbar is connected but there is still no sound. What should I check next?
- A. Confirm (1) the soundbar is set to the correct HDMI input (HDMI1/HDMI2), (2) the soundbar HDMI OUT is connected to the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port, and (3) the TV has SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) enabled and Sound Out set to the HDMI(ARC) device.
