If your LG TV standard remote control does not respond, the most common causes are depleted batteries, a faulty IR (infrared) signal, button failure, or interference from strong lighting. Follow the checks below to identify whether the issue is with the remote, the TV, or the surrounding environment.
Please Note
- Replace both batteries at the same time and match the + and - polarity marks.
- Do not mix old and new batteries or different battery types.
- If you will not use the remote for an extended period, remove the batteries and store them separately to help prevent leakage and remote damage.
- If battery leakage is present, stop using the remote and contact LG Customer Support.
An LG TV standard remote may stop working in these situations
A standard (IR) remote control requires good batteries, a working IR transmitter, and a clear path to the TV’s IR receiver. It may also appear to fail if the TV is not powering on or if strong light sources interfere with the IR signal.
1. Batteries are discharged or installed incorrectly
If the batteries are low, the remote may not send a strong enough signal. Incorrect polarity or mixed battery types can also prevent operation.
2. The remote’s buttons or IR transmitter are malfunctioning
A remote can fail completely (no buttons work) or partially (only certain buttons do not respond) due to internal button wear or transmitter issues.
3. IR signal interference from strong surrounding light
Strong light sources such as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), some LED lamps, or electronic ballasts can interfere with infrared communication.
4. The issue is with the TV or another remote (set-top box remote)
If the TV does not power on from the TV’s own button, the TV may be the issue. Also, some set-top box remotes use different communication methods, so the phone-camera IR check may not apply.
Try these steps to restore control with your LG TV standard remote
Step 1. Replace the remote batteries and re-test
1. Press any button and check whether the remote’s front LED lights (if your model has an indicator).
2. If the LED does not light or the TV does not respond, open the battery cover.
3. Replace both batteries with new ones (do not mix old and new).
4. Point the remote at the TV and try Power, Volume, and Channel buttons again.
Step 2. Check whether the remote is sending an IR signal using a phone camera
1. Open the camera app on an Android phone.
2. Point the remote’s front (IR emitter) toward the phone’s camera lens.
3. While watching the phone screen, press the buttons that do not work.
4. If you see a flashing light on the phone screen for some buttons but not others, the remote may have button failure.
5. If you do not see flashing for any button, replace the batteries again (known-good new batteries) and repeat the test. If it still does not flash, the remote may be faulty.
Step 3. Eliminate lighting interference and confirm line of sight
1. Turn off nearby fluorescent lamps (including CFLs) and any lighting with electronic ballasts.
2. Move closer to the TV and aim the remote directly at the TV’s IR receiver area.
3. Remove obstacles between the remote and the TV (soundbar edges, décor, cabinet doors, etc.).
4. Test the remote again.
Step 4. Confirm the TV can power on without the remote
1. Check whether the TV standby light is on (its location varies by model).
2. Press the TV’s physical Power button to see if the TV turns on.
3. If the TV does not turn on using the TV button, the issue may be with the TV or power source rather than the remote.
Step 5. If available, test with another LG standard remote
LG standard TV remotes are often compatible across models. If you have another LG standard remote, try using it to confirm whether the issue is the original remote.
Note: LG Magic Remotes may not be compatible across models and should be troubleshot separately.
FAQ
- Q. Does this guide apply to LG Magic Remote?
- A. This guide is for LG standard (IR) remotes. If you are using an LG Magic Remote, pairing and re-registration may be required. In the 2025 LG TV menu, you can also review remote features via Settings > General > Accessibility > Learn Remote Control.
- Q. Why does the phone camera test not work with my set-top box remote?
- A. Some set-top box remotes use communication methods that are not infrared, or they may not have a visible IR indicator. In those cases, the phone camera method and the remote’s own lamp may not reliably detect a fault.
