If your LG TV is connected to a soundbar, speaker, or home theater system but you hear no sound, confirm the connection type and select the correct Sound Out option for that connection. Also verify the external device volume and power.
Please Note
- Before changing settings, confirm whether the external audio device is connected by HDMI (ARC/eARC), optical, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi.
- If the external audio device volume is set to 0 or muted, it may look like the TV settings are incorrect.
- If you are using HDMI ARC/eARC, use a High-Speed HDMI cable that supports CEC, and connect to the TV’s ARC/eARC-labeled HDMI port.
- Menu names and available options may vary by model, region, and webOS version.
No sound from an external audio device can occur in these situations
This issue is usually caused by an incorrect audio output selection, a muted/low-volume external device, or a mismatch between the connection method and the selected Sound Out option.
1. The TV audio output is set to a different device
If Sound Out is set to TV Speaker while a soundbar is connected, the soundbar may stay silent. If Sound Out is set to an external device that is not currently connected, you may hear no sound at all.
2. The external device is muted, set to zero volume, or on the wrong input
Even with correct TV settings, the soundbar/speaker can be muted, set to volume 0, or switched to a different input (for example, not set to HDMI ARC or Optical).
3. HDMI-CEC (SIMPLINK) is off when using HDMI ARC
Some HDMI ARC setups require SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) to be enabled for audio to route correctly to the external device.
Set the correct LG TV audio output for your external device connection
Step 1. Confirm the external device is powered on and audible
Turn on the soundbar/speaker and raise its volume.
Make sure it is not muted.
If the device has an input/source button, select the input that matches your connection (for example, HDMI ARC/eARC or Optical).
Step 2. Select the correct Sound Out option on the TV
Setting: Settings > All Settings > Sound > Sound Out
Open the TV settings and go to Sound Out.
Select the option that matches how your external device is connected (for example, HDMI(ARC) Device for HDMI ARC, Optical for optical cable, or Bluetooth/Wi-Fi for wireless connections).
After changing Sound Out, play content and confirm audio is coming from the selected device.
Step 3. If using HDMI ARC, turn on SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC)
Setting: Settings > General > External Devices > HDMI Settings > SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC)
Set SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) to On.
Then set Sound Out to the HDMI(ARC) Device option.
If sound still does not play, power off both the TV and the audio device, then power them back on and test again.
Step 4. Check your webOS version if menus look different
If the menu names or layout differ from the steps above, your TV may be running a different webOS version.
On many models, you can open a quick settings/information view and confirm the webOS version, then follow the closest matching menu path available on your TV.
FAQ
- Q. Why does my LG TV show the soundbar as selected, but there is still no sound?
- A. Most commonly, the soundbar is muted or set to volume 0, or it is on the wrong input/source. Confirm the soundbar volume and input first, then re-check the TV Sound Out setting.
- Q. Do I need to enable SIMPLINK for HDMI ARC sound?
- A. In many HDMI ARC setups, yes. Turn on SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) and then set Sound Out to the HDMI(ARC) Device option. Also confirm you are connected to the TV’s ARC/eARC HDMI port with a compatible HDMI cable.
