Frequent door openings, blocked vents, or poorly sealed doors may reduce cooling performance. Check the refrigerator and ice compartment conditions to help maintain consistent cooling and ice production.
Why can cooling or ice production decrease?
Cooling and ice production may be affected by how the refrigerator is loaded, how often its doors are opened, and whether each compartment closes properly.
The refrigerator is working harder
The refrigerator may run more often during warm weather. A large amount of food or frequent door opening can also increase the cooling demand.
Cold air cannot circulate evenly
Food blocking the air vents can cause uneven temperatures inside the refrigerator compartment.
Warm air is entering a compartment
A refrigerator, freezer, or ice compartment door that is not fully closed can reduce cooling, cause frost buildup, or interrupt ice production.
The ice level is being misread
Uneven ice inside the in-door bin may cause the icemaker to detect that the bin is full and stop making ice.
Please check each compartment using these steps.
Review the cooling and icemaker conditions that apply to your refrigerator.
Case 1. Adjust the temperature gradually
For most digitally controlled models, 37°F for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer work well in typical conditions. If the refrigerator is heavily loaded or opened frequently, a lower setting may be needed. Allow up to 24 hours for the temperature to stabilize after each adjustment.
Case 2. Keep the air vents clear
Arrange food so it does not block the vents. On French door models, the vents are usually in the center column along the rear wall of the refrigerator compartment.
Case 3. Close and clean the doors
Close the refrigerator and freezer doors completely after adding or removing food. Periodically clean dirty door seals with warm water and mild detergent so the doors can seal properly.
Case 4. Discard the first ice batches
After using the icemaker for the first time following installation, discard the first two batches. Initial ice or water may contain particles or odors from the water supply line or tank.
Case 5. Level or transfer the stored ice
If the in-door ice bin is full, move ice to another bin and store it in the freezer. If ice is piled unevenly, gently shake the bin to level it and help the icemaker read the amount correctly.
Case 6. Close the ice compartment door
Make sure the ice compartment door is tightly closed. An open door can allow cold air to freeze nearby food and may cause the icemaker to stop producing ice.
Case 7. Empty the bin when ice is off
If the icemaker will remain off for more than a few hours, empty the ice bin. The compartment can gradually warm, causing any remaining cubes to melt.
Case 8. Still need help?
If the issue persists after following the steps above, you can get further support through LG Chatbot on our website or by requesting a technician visit.
