Loud banging (water hammer) [washing machine]

Sound of Thunder and Violent Shaking on LG Washer If you hear a loud thundering bang or feel violent shaking from your home’s plumbing when your LG washer fills with water, this is typically caused by water hammer. Although the noise may seem to come from the washing machine, water hammer is not an appliance defect. It is a plumbing-related issue caused by excessive household water pressure. Try this What Is Water Hammer? > Water hammer occurs when fast-moving water inside the pipes is forced to stop or change direction abruptly—usually when the washer’s water inlet valve closes after filling. Because water cannot be compressed, the sudden stop creates a high-pressure shockwave that reverberates through the pipes, resulting in: A loud thunder-like bang Vibrations or shaking in walls or floors Knocking noises immediately after the washer stops filling This phenomenon can occur with any home appliance that draws water quickly, not just washing machines. Common Causes > High household water pressure Old or unpadded plumbing lacking air chambers Long, rigid pipe runs that easily transmit vibration Quick-closing water valves, such as those in modern washers Resolution Options > Reduce Water Pressure (Most Recommended & Easiest) Close the faucet supplying water to the washer completely. Reopen it only halfway to reduce flow and pressure. If using a main water valve, adjust it gradually until the noise decreases. Install a Pressure Regulator A plumber can add a water pressure regulator to maintain a stable, safe water pressure level. Add Water Hammer Arrestors or Air Chambers These devices absorb shockwaves inside the plumbing. Ideal for homes with older piping or homes that frequently experience water hammer. Use Silent or Slow-Closing Check Valves Helps reduce the impact force created by suddenly stopping water flow. Note Options 2–4 may require professional installation or modifications to the home’s plumbing system. Important Reminder > Water hammer is not caused by the washer itself. It will not damage the appliance, but repeated plumbing shockwaves can damage household pipes over time, so addressing it is recommended. Still Having Issues?
