Siphoning water [laundry washer]
If water filling in the tub of your washing machine just keeps draining away all the time but not being actively pumped out, this is known as siphoning.
The washing machine is trying to fill the drum with water, but water is being immediately tossed down the drain.
The washer will keep detecting insufficient water inside the tub and keep topping it up with more.
Washing machines nowadays should be designed to acknowledge something’s wrong and to abort the wash cycle anytime an error shows up in the control panel display window.
If not, the washer may get stuck in this cycle indefinitely.
- Siphoning occurs when the end of the drain hose is lower than the level of water inside the washing machine.
- Siphoning occurs when there is no AIR GAP between drain hose and standpipe (shut airtight).
- Siphoning may occur if the drain hose is pushed TOO FAR down the standpipe or house drain.
EXAMPLE
Try this
Connecting the Drain Hose
Connect the drain hose to either a standpipe or laundry tub.
- The drain must be installed in accordance with any applicable local building codes and regulations.
- Make sure that the drain hose is not stretched, pinched, crushed, or kinked.
- The end of the drain hose should be located a minimum of 24" (61 cm) and a maximum of 96" (244 cm) above the bottom of the washer.
- For best results, locate the end of the drain hose no higher than 66" (168 cm) above the bottom of the washer.
If the drain outlet is raised beyond 66" (168 cm), it will put a strain on the pump and the drain function will be increasingly affected. - Never create an airtight seal between the hose and the drain with tape or other means.
If no air gap is present, water can be siphoned out of the drum resulting in continuous water filling and immediately draining out preventing wash cycle from executing.
Using a Standpipe to Drain
- Clip the end of the hose into the elbow bracket.
- Insert the end of the drain hose into the standpipe.
- Use the provided tie strap ❷ to secure the drain hose in place.
- If the water valves and drain are built into the wall, fasten the drain hose to one of the water hoses with the provided tie strap ❸ (ribbed side on inside).
• Connect the elbow bracket ❶ within 4 inches (10 cm) of the end of the drain hose.
If the drain hose is extended more than 4 inches (10 cm) beyond the end of the elbow bracket, mold or microorganisms could spread to the inside of the washer.
