[LG Dishwasher] Using the Water Softening System / Removing White Residues

Are there white residues on the dishes from the dishwasher?

Tap water contains some amounts of mineral substances such as calcium and magnesium.
After the dishwasher’s interior dries, the mineral substances are visible as white residues on dishes and the tub.
LG dishwashers are equipped with a water softening system designed to reduce the mineral content in the water.

Causes and Symptoms

• The water softening setting on the dishwasher may be set too low.
• The water softening system may not be functioning effectively as salt has not been refilled.

Have you measured the hardness level of your tap water?

➔ Use the test strip provided with the user manual to assess the hardness of your water.

Measuring water hardness

1. Take out the test strip from the user manual.

2. Dip the test strip into a sample of still water for a second, then remove it and gently shake off excess water.

3. After one minute, compare the color change on the strip to the provided reference strip.
Match the color to determine the corresponding hardness level.

Is the water softening level set appropriately?

➔ When using the dishwasher for the first time, the default softening level is set to H0.
Adjust the setting so that it is appropriate for the hardness level of your tap water.

How to adjust the water softening level

1. Power off the dishwasher. While it is off, simultaneously press the [Power] button and the [Half Load] button on the control panel.

2. Press the [Delay Start] button repeatedly to set the desired softening level.

3. Press the [Start] button to save the setting. The power will turn off after saving.

※ Note: The hardness level may increase during months of low rainfall.
Set the softening level higher during these months.

Is the Salt Refill icon on the display blinking?

➔ This indicates that the salt used in the water softening system has been depleted.
Add high-purity salt (99%) to the salt container.

How to refill the dishwasher salt

1. Remove the lower rack.

2. Unscrew the cap of the salt container located next to the filters by turning it anticlockwise.

3. Use a funnel to pour salt into the salt container.
If this is your first time using the water softening system, add 1kg of salt and 1L of water.
Refill with 1kg of salt when the Salt Refill icon turns on.
Stir the mixture using a long stick for faster dissolution.

4. Put the cap back on and turn it clockwise to close.
If the cap is not closed tightly, salt water may leak and cause corrosion in the tub.

5. Run the [Express] cycle without any dishes in the dishwasher.
Select the cycle and press the [Start] button.
This action helps to remove any salt left in the interior.

※ After refilling the salt, it may take up to 24hours for the Salt Refill icon to turn off, depending on the type of salt and its rate of dissolution.
