Sound bar slowing down Wi-Fi in the vicinity
Customers have recently been reporting that their sound bar, when turned on, slows down the Wi-Fi in the vicinity, meaning the Wi-Fi signal strength drops tremendously around the television.
Cause and Symptoms
The connection between the sound bar and the wireless active sub-woofer consists of pairing one to another which is Bluetooth technology. Bluetooth operates in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency range same as Wi-Fi designed for greater distance coverage. The reason for Bluetooth connectivity is the added frequency-hopping technology less prone to interference. The downside to it is the monopolizing of the wi-fi signal strength in the vicinity of the home entertainment system.
Customers claim the moment sound bar and TV are turned on, the wi-fi signal strength around drops from about 600mbps down to approximately 0.2~5mbps. It appears the Bluetooth frequency hopping is causing the sudden drastic drop in signal strength.
Try this
If customer’s home network router is dual band, have all devices other than the sound bar connect to the 5GHz network and keep sound bar running off the 2.4GHz Network.
If customer’s home network router is 2.4GHz only, have customer change the router’s transmission channel from 11 down to 1 or any other channels in between which would be less used, therefore less prone to interference. The factory engineers recommend setting channel to 44 or 48 and channel bandwidth to 20MHz or 40Mhz as they inform us LG sound bars do not venture within those parameters.
