1. Some DVD Players have a larger aspect ratio than a widescreen TV. 1:85.1 and larger aspect ratio will show a black line on top and bottom of the TV screen. The aspect ratio of a widescreen TV is 1.78:1 (16.9). A larger setting on the DVD player may be needed. 16:9 is the maximum allowed setting for both TV and DVD Player.

2. If TV is set at "Set by Program" then the native aspect ratio of the program will be used. The setting can be changed to 16:9 to stretch a 4:3 aspect ratio program to fit the entire screen.

3. Some broadcasters will up convert an analog program to an HD program. The bars are forced to left and right sides since native aspect ratio of HD are 16:9. Some TV's may allow a change is aspect ratio to 4:3 to try and correct this.

4. Make sure the resolution is set properly on a Set-Top box. If the set-top box is set to convert all resolutions to 720p or higher then change the resolution to proper setting for maximum display function.

5. Not all TV's will allow a change to 4:3 aspect ratio when watching HD channels. Some newer models will allow this change. If the TV is an older model, there is nothing that can be done to correct the aspect ratio as the broadcaster is up scaling the programming.
