Is some food freezing in the refrigerator?
Glacial air is NEVER intended to linger in the refrigeration compartment else it may freeze items such as fresh vegetables. Air vents should not be blocked either. If the cool air is prevented (blocked – access denied) from flowing to the freezer compartment, two things risk happening: the temperature in the freezer will gradually increase (get warmer) beginning a thawing process and food in the refrigeration compartment might freeze.
We cannot stress how important it is to NOT fill a refrigerator to the brim and to ensure open space where the vents are located for clear passage of the cool air flow.
Cause and Symptoms
Some food can and will freeze when the refrigerator’s compartment’s set temperature is lower than the food’s optimal storage temperature. Also, when easily freezing food are located very close to the cold air outlets they can freeze.
Try this
- Avoid storing bean sprouts, tofu or any type of food easily prone to swiftly freezing near the cold air outlets in the refrigerator compartment. Place them in front of the shelf and adjust the temperature to middle or low.
- Store fruits and vegetables in the vegetable crisper for optimal conservation of freshness.
- Last but not least, when storing food in the refrigerator, avoid overfilling the shelves and please ensure no food is blocking the air vents.
This has been found to be a major factor with food freezing in the refrigerator compartment. Leave sufficient space around air vents for the cool air to circulate appropriately.

More Troubleshooting Tips
>In the case of split shelves refrigerator, it was noticed by a customer who notified LG that by staggering the shelves inside the refrigerator compartment, the freezing inside suddenly stopped.
Conclusion being that by allowing air flow circulation to move more freely inside, the chances of food freezing is less likely to occur.
By default, most refrigerator have that compartment's temperature set at 37°F which is not that far from water's freezing point.
Although recommended by manufacturer, should you find food freezing in the refrigerator compartment you may want to consider raising the temperature to 39~40°F which is still very safe for preserving food and highly unlikely food will freeze.
Should you be seeking more information about ideal temperature settings and how to adjust temperature in both compartments, please head to this article titled " Ideal temperature setting".
At the risk of repeating ourselves, food with high moisture content should always be stored at the front of the refrigerator as opposed to all the way back where the air vents are located.
If everything written here has been applied but food freezing in the refrigerator compartment still persists, it could mean some technical defect with the temperature sensors reading incorrectly or evaporators working too hard. In either case, in-house technical service will be required to repair the refrigerator. As stipulated in below last resort statement:
I bought a ThermoPro TP359 wireless Bluetooth thermometer (stores data feed) and placed inside refrigerator at the back. The temperature is consistent, just 3-4 degrees off. So, setting the refrigerator compartment temperature at 6°C resulted in a temperature range of 0.8° - 4.0° over weeks, with an average of slightly over 3°C with very minor variances most days.”
